Lessons from Kathy
Here we are. None of us expected this—yet this is the hand we’ve been dealt. So here it goes.
This is a tribute to my friend, Kathy Hepinstall Parks. Before she was a great writer, she was a phenomenal human being. Great writers know how to live—and living was Kathy’s most powerful skill.
The grief of losing her dragged me through the bottom of a fast-moving river. I hit every rock, from one shore to the next. After days of wading through thoughts and memories—regrets, hopes, and aching questions—I came to realize this was a crossing I had to make alone.
To be honest, I didn’t know what to do. I tried journaling. I went on long walks with Milo, my dog—who always listens. And then, in that strange liminal space just before dawn, when you’re still asleep but your mind is starting to return from the current, an idea began to form. A task. A thing I could make. Something to occupy that dull ringing in my chest.
This piece was created in honor of Kathy and the incredible depth of character she carried. The words that follow are drawn from the lessons she shared in her own journal. It is dedicated to her husband, Michael Parks; her mother, Polly; and to all who survive her—family, friends, colleagues, creative kindreds, gentle acquaintances, and those who cherish humanity, kindness, and authenticity.
The Lessons
This is a house of lessons.
They come in the night
and sit on your chest
and breathe with you.
A flower opening is a lesson
A lost black dog is a lesson
A bluebird is a lesson.
Valleys contain
the lessons of mountaintops.
What is given to you is a lesson
What is taken from you is a lesson
Ibogaine is a plant
that contains lessons of God,
and those lessons are perfect
even if you don’t understand
until you are on your deathbed
with a morning breeze on your face.
This is a house of lessons
You are a house of lessons
You are the school of God.
Love your lessons.
Your lessons love you.

About This Print
This image is made for Kathy, and friends of Kathy Heppinstall Parks. The idea is to make it available for anyone at the cost of putting the ink on canvas in order to be enjoyed by everyone.
There’s only one size—because the West Texas landscapes are huge. Sometimes the scale of things can be big enough to make us feel small, no matter where we stand.
If you would like this piece of art for your home, you are free to have it printed for yourself. The price simply covers printing, framing, and shipping. I have one in my home now, and it turned out great.
A note of interest:
The handwriting at the bottom of the image is from an image that Kathy sent from her journal. That is from her hand and a part of her thoughts.
Rest in peace, Kathy.
